The purpose of the visit was to examine the treatment and detention conditions of persons held in prison. To this end, the CPT delegation visited Tiszalök and Szombathely National Prisons. Particular attention was paid to the measures taken by the authorities to implement recommendations made by the Committee after its previous visit carried out in 2023.
In the course of the visit, the delegation held consultations with Sándor Pintér, Minister of the Interior, Zoltán Bolcsik, Secretary of State for Law Enforcement, Mátyás Hegyaljai, Deputy Secretary of State for the European Union and International Affairs, Tamás Tóth, Director General of the Hungarian Prison Service, and other senior officials from the Ministry of the Interior and the Prison Service.
At the end of the visit, the delegation presented its preliminary findings to the Hungarian authorities.
The visit was carried out by the following CPT members: Victor Zaharia (Head of delegation), Anna Jonsson Cornell and Vassilis Tzevelekos. They were assisted by an expert, Jake Hard, prison doctor, and supported by Petr Hnátík of the CPT Secretariat.
