Atrás Johannes Learning Centre - a bilingual school which teaches and hires minorities

Purpose: Johannes Learning Centre is Stavanger’s main vehicle for building language competence. Although originally all the staff were Norwegians, 40% are now of minority background. The school has developed from being only concerned with using and teaching Norwegian to practice bilingualism and multiligualism, with mixed staff. To achieve this the school introduced a policy of hiring former students and appointing people with bilingual skills, wherever there was a need.

Stimulus/Rationale:  The primary rationale behind the Johannes Learning Centre is to provide newcomers (both children and adults) with the necessary Norwegian language skills and education to be able to gain equal access to the Norwegian labour market.

Process:  As a consequence of the policy of hiring former students and appointing people with bilingual skills, the school has achieved better results and a more inclusive learning environment.

Impact:  The expected impact is to create more inclusive and multilingual schools.
