In a statement to mark European Roma Holocaust Memorial Day, on 2 August 2021, Council of Europe Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Buric has highlighted the importance of remembering Roma Holocaust victims. She stressed that learning from the past would allow for a better future for Europe’s Roma and Travellers and highlighted Council of Europe education initiatives that teach Roma history and positive Roma contributions to European identity. The Day is a tribute to thousands of Roma men, women and children who were murdered in the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp on the night of August 2, 1944.
