The President of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, Gudrun Mosler-Törnström, met with the President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko on 11 September 2018. They discussed the importance of local self-government in the governance of our societies.
During this exchange, President Lukashenko and Congress President highlighted the essential nature of the local level and agreed on the need to pursue fruitful cooperation between the Congress and the Republic of Belarus in the field of local self-government. President Lukashenko confirmed Belarus' interest in sharing the experience of the Council of Europe Congress.
He wished the Congress every success in its organisation of a dedicated round table wich will be held to discuss how the principles of the Charter are taken into account into the system of local administration in Belarus, as well as their practical implementation and future prospects in Minsk on 12 September.
She also took part in a seminar with students and professors from the Academy of Public Administration of Minsk. On the same day, a seminar brought together Congress members and experts to discuss the situation of local self-government in Belarus, in the light of the European Charter of Local Self-Government.
