Improving the management of prison and probation services – Jõhvi conference

The Council of Europe’s annual Conference of Directors of Prisons and Probation Services, to be held in Jõhvi (Estonia) on 19 and 20 June, will explore ways to improve the management of prisons and probation services, and the co-operation between them.

Held under the theme “Working together effectively: Management and Co-operation Models between Prison and Probation Services”, the conference is hosted by the Estonian Prison Service.

Participants will share best practices on management models and discuss the lessons learnt from the privatisation and outsourcing of prison and probation services. They will also address staff management issues such as which is the most adequate prisoner-staff ratio and professional ethics.

Speakers at the opening include Urmas Reinsalu, Minister of Justice of Estonia, Jan Kleijssen, Director of Information Society and Action against Crime of the Council of Europe, and Marianne Vollan, General Director of the Correctional Service of Norway.
