Internet Governance Forum 2020

The Council of Europe is taking part in the 15th UN Internet Governance Forum (IGF), being held online from 2 to 17 November under the theme “Internet for human resilience and solidarity”. Council of Europe representatives and experts are contributing to debates on the challenges to freedom of expression and data protection brought by the digital transformation, including those caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, ways of tackling hate speech online, and the impact of artificial intelligence applications on human rights.

Events the Council of Europe is organising or supporting:

  • 3 November

How the private sector can implement Artificial Intelligence principles in practice, organised by the International Chamber of Commerce. (4.50-6.50 p.m. UTC)

  • 5 November

Open forum aimed at examining the current challenges to freedom of expression, including the spread of disinformation and its impact on people´s trust in the media, co-organised with the Hamburg Media School. (7.30-8.30 a.m. UTC)

Open forum exploring the way Artificial Intelligence ethical principles can be translated into policies, organised by UNESCO. (8.40-9.40 a.m. UTC)

How to tackle discrimination by AI-enabled technologies as well as the potential of existing regulatory frameworks and algorithmic impact assessments to address this risk. Co-organised with ePaństwo Foundation (4.20-8.10 p.m. UTC)

Open forum to discuss AI applications in the area of health and related challenges, including in the context of COVID19. Co-organised with the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) (5:40-6:40 p.m. UTC)

  • 9 November

Workshop on the protection of personal data in the context of COVID-19, aimed at drawing lessons from practical cases and giving insights on best practices. (12. 10 to 1:40 p.m. UTC)

  • 10 November

Workshop examining European policy and practice initiatives combating hate speech, launched in past years to address the risks that online hate speech poses to human rights and societies, co-organised with the EU Fundamental Rights Agency (10.20-11.20 a.m. UTC)
