Atrás Jagland on European Action Day for Victims of Hate Crime: “22 July cannot be forgotten”

Secretary General

"22nd of July is a painful day of memory for Norway and for all of Europe. This day cannot be forgotten", underlined Thorbjørn Jagland, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, on the commemoration of Oslo and Utøya attacks in 2011.

The date marks European Action Day for Victims of Hate Crime as part of the No Hate Speech Movement, paying tribute to the victims of the 2011 terrorist attacks against the government quarter in Oslo and of the massacre of 77 young people on the island of Utøya.

"22nd of July is a reminder that hate speech on and off-line is not just words. It is a stepping stone to discrimination and violence against others", emphasized Jagland.

A series of public actions and educational activities have been organised throughout the week all over Europe (Facebook event).
