Shaping future visions of Europe: European citizenship education is key

The concept of European Citizenship is a dynamic and complex idea deeply connected with the ideals of democracy, participation and human rights in Europe. Formal and non-formal education play a key role in promoting it to young people, engaging them in discussions about European topics, encouraging them to vote in elections and empowering them to become agents of social change.

On 19-21 November 2019, the first Forum on European democratic citizenship education, Edu4Europe, is taking place at the European Youth Centre Strasbourg. It will bring together some 120 practitioners from the youth and education fields, researchers, policy makers and civil society organisations.

Edu4Europe is a forum providing space for exchanges of experiences, strengthening youth work and bringing current issues and needs to the attention of policy makers. In its first edition, the main topic is future visions of Europe. Participants will look at directions the European policies may take and how to involve young people in shaping the European future through educational processes.

Gabriel Attal, French Secretary of State, Minister of National Education and Youth, Matjaž Gruden, Director of Democratic Participation and Emilija Gagrčin, Advisory Council on Youth in the Council of Europe will deliver speeches during the official opening of the forum.

The forum is organized by the French Agency for Erasmus+ Youth and Sport in co-operation with the French Ministry of National Education and Youth, the EU-Council of Europe youth partnership, the Council of Europe, the German and Italian National Agencies (Jugend für Europa and Agenzia Nazionale per Giovani) and the SALTO South-East Europe resource centre.
