The Secretary General has welcomed the ceasefire agreement reached at the meeting of the contact group in Minsk on Friday 5 September, saying:

"Everybody I talked to in Moscow and Kyiv this week wanted a ceasefire. I am relieved to hear this is now to become reality. I hope this can be the first step to a political solution of the crisis."
