Violence against women in France: need to better protect victims and their children

In its first report on implementation by France of the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (the Istanbul Convention”) the Group of Experts (GREVIO) welcomes the authorities’ commitment and efforts in this field. It also underlines a number of shortcomings and recommends that measures be taken to offer greater protection for victims and their children, for example by increasing the number of specialised accommodation facilities, and that the perpetrators of violence be prosecuted.

The report highlights the legislative steps taken resulting in a significant strengthening of the legal framework for preventing and punishing violence, and the measures adopted to promote true gender equality, in particular those fostering an integrated approach to equality issues.

Despite this progress, the figures on violence against women and the impunity of perpetrators remain worrying.
