Atzealdea Intercultural Interaction: collective healing and memory of this time

Purpose: Using storytelling to build connections, address fears and ease anxiety.

Stimulus/Rationale:

In 2020 the Cities of Ballarat, Melton and Maribyrnong launched a Storytelling project involving a series of three remotely delivered workshops that focused on how the art of storytelling can be used to help build connection, address fear, ease anxiety, and be a tool in trauma-informed practice.

Covid-19 saw a dramatic shift in the lives and functioning of our communities. As we navigated this, many community members found themselves in previously inconceivable circumstances: without work, without social connection, with increased family stresses and insecurity, and living with heightened levels of fear. There were increased risks of family violence and homelessness. We saw discrimination and racism towards minority groups. We heard stories of children who were struggling to maintain their learning in a remote environment.

At the same time, we saw tremendous generosity, and new neighbourly relationships forged from driveways and over fences. We saw first responders and health workers honoured for the work they do. We saw widespread recognition that there were elements of this altered lifestyle that were worth investing in and keeping after the crisis ended – more time with families, for some.

Process:

This project provided an avenue for individuals to understand and contribute their stories in a safe and supported way to the collective healing and memory of this time. The healing benefits of storytelling are many, and well understood in the field of psychology.

The overall project was supported by partners, The International Storytelling Center who conducted the three sessions via Zoom. Each City also partnered with a local health organisation, enabling follow up support and an allied health approach. Finally, each City Council area undertook evaluation with their participants and received overwhelmingly positive feedback. The Cities decided to continue to work together by facilitating a Story Tell event. Participants were invited to develop a two-minute story to share at the event. This built on and provided interested participants with an avenue to contribute their stories in a safe and supported way.
