Successful literacy actions for Roma women in Patras

Aiming at combating discrimination and protecting human rights and equality, the Community Center-Roma Unit (CC-RU) of the Municipality of Patras (Greece) continues the successful implementation of customized literacy actions for Roma women, so that to strengthen the process of their social integration.

Within this framework, competent officers of the CC-RU have designed and deliver educational sessions for Roma women, beneficiaries of the Center’s services, so that they obtain the primary school diploma and then, be able to attend the Second Opportunity School, and obtain the certificate of Compulsory Education (CE). The ultimate goal of the whole effort is that Roma women develop skills to support their own children at school (reducing school dropout), and mainly widen their perspectives for inclusion in the labor market and in the society.

A specially designed space at the premises of the CC-RU is dedicated to the provision of the training sessions, which had started with only one Roma woman, in November 2022! Since then, the positive impressions led to a rising trend of the number of participants, marking the success of the initiative and its inclusion as part of the services provided by the Community Center of the Municipality of Patras, a unit operated by Patras Social Organisation (KODIP) and co-funded by the Operational Program of the Region of Western Greece – ESF actions.
