On 3-4 April 2025, experts from the Council of Europe’s Intercultural Cities (ICC) Programme visited Reggio Emilia, Italy.
A member of the Council of Europe Secretariat and an independent ICC expert met the Mayor, Marco Massari, the Deputy Mayor responsible for intercultural policy and education, Marwa Mahmoud, as well as city officials and a wide range of local stakeholders active in different areas related to intercultural inclusion, in order to review and discuss the city's strengths and needs in relation to intercultural inclusion policies and governance. The experts also met with representatives of associations represented in the Mondinsieme Foundation’s Assembly.
The programme of the visit included a presentation of the Council of Europe’s intercultural inclusion approach to representatives of local authorities and civil society, presentations of Reggio Emilia’s index results from its 2024 report, and meetings with organisations and individuals working on education, communication and culture, as well as public managers and public officials recently trained on intercultural competences.
The visit will result in a report drawing up the “intercultural profile” of Reggio Emilia and providing tailor-made recommendations as a basis for subsequent work by the city.
Reggio Emilia joined the Intercultural Cities (ICC) Programme in 2010, and has contributed many good practices to the work of the ICC Network.
