LIREA: a project fostering the integration of Third Country Nationals victims of trafficking in Italy, Austria, Malta, Cyprus and Greece

The integration of Third Country Nationals in host societies is a challenge, and it becomes an even bigger one if these migrants are victims of trafficking. This issue was addressed by the “LIREA: Life Is REborn from the Ash” project which aimed at fostering the full integration of Third Country Nationals victims of trafficking in the societies of the project partner countries (Italy, Austria, Malta, Cyprus, Greece), by enhancing the capacity of the host societies in implementing innovative inclusion practices and by upgrading the competences of the target group, combining the socio-economic aspects.

LIREA exploited innovative approaches to develop the skills of professionals involved in the inclusion process and to enhance the economic cross-border co-operation by identifying good practices in the field and produce a related guide. To that end, it stimulated a network for Economic Sustainability at European Union level, so that Third Country Nationals victims of trafficking enter the economic sphere. In parallel, it included psycho-social workshops and training for the target group.

CYCLISIS, the project partner in Greece, located in Patras and member of the local network for the management of interculturalism by the Municipality of Patras (ICC member since 2008) maintained direct co-operation with the local government organisation. It implemented the project mainly in the areas of Patras and Athens, in close co-operation with MELISSA Network, and besides other actions, they were responsible for the development of the learning platform and the provision of training for professionals providing direct support to victims. The training course helped them to better manage and address the challenges and problems that are posed by trafficked persons within their inclusion process. The training triggered their interest in working intensively in this sector and offered useful suggestions to those who wish to contribute to the fight against trafficking of Third Country Nationals and to support their inclusion process by forming a community of volunteers ready to support every step on the way.

The LIREA tools and related materials are free of charge and uploaded on the project website. To ensure sustainability of project results, the training modules have been incorporated in the training curriculum of educational institutes.
