Zurück Reducing Racism

Purpose: Reducing racism

Stimulus/Rationale:

The City Council has an endorsed reducing racism statement and hosts a community reporting tool where reports can be logged about instances of racism to the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission.

Process:

Maribyrnong values diversity as a source of creativity and innovation, and wants to continue to foster and promote a sense of belonging amongst the community that highlights the advantage of diversity and the importance of respecting differences.

As part of this commitment to its multicultural community engaging in an intercultural way, Maribyrnong is raising awareness about the importance of reducing diversity-related prejudices that lay the foundations of discriminatory and racist attitudes within the community.

The City Council is committed to:

  • raising awareness of racism and how it affects individuals and the broader community;
  • identifying, promoting and building on positive programmes to prevent and reduce racism;
  • empowering communities and individuals to take action to prevent and reduce racism and to seek help when it occurs.

Maribyrnong is working with the Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission to hear about ways to reduce racism as an organisation and talk about how to become anti-racist.

Community members can report instances of racism on the city’s website, see Racism Stops with Me.
