2002 - Gdynia

The Gdynia townGdynia is a major port in the bay of Gdańsk on the southern coast of the Baltic sea, and is a northern Polish seaside resort. It is symbolic for Poland’s history and identity.  The town has also successfully combined its economic and environmental future, capitalising on the assets of its varied natural heritage to the full.  For many years, this dynamic town has sought to promote a modern and democratic Europe both through its twinnings and through its participation in a large number of organisations.  Through its 12 European twinnings with Aalborg (Denmark), Baranovichi (Belarus), Kaliningrad (Russian Federation), Karlskrona (Sweden), Kiel (Germany), Klaipėda (Lithuania), Kotka (Finland), Kristiansand (Norway), Kunda (Estonia), the region of Vilnius Liepaja (Latvia) and Plymouth (United Kingdom), and two American twinnings (Brooklyn and Seattle), Gdynia has expanded its international contacts and formed a “network of Baltic towns twinned with Gdynia”, with each of which it maintains specific exchanges.
