Other specialisation: My career before joining ATLEU focussed on complaints and claim against public authorities (mainly the police but also Local Government, Home Office, Prisons, etc). At ATLEU I am building a practice of using that background and experience to pursue complaints and claims specifically for victims of trafficking. The types of actions have included claims against the police and local authority for failures to identify indicators of trafficking resulting in missed opportunities to make referrals to the NRM, provide support, pursue criminal investigations, etc and sadly, leaving individuals in exploitative situations. As a team we are also exploring ways to try and pursue claims / action against the Government in connection with the [poor] implementation and oversight of dedicated visa schemes (e.g. Seasonal Worker Visa, Health and Care Worker Visa etc) where people are being exploited in their home country (e.g. paying unnecessary recruitment fees) and upon arrival in the UK (e.g. being asked for more money to be given work, not being given work / sufficient hours of work, not being paid, poor working conditions, etc) and how this leaves those people at further risk of exploitation while in the UK and upon their return home.
