Au Royaume-Uni, l’accès au traitement dans le cadre du National Health Service (NHS) n’est pas le même partout, les différents clinical commissioning groups (CCG) locaux ou conseils de santé appliquant leurs propres niveaux de prestation et critères de sélection. Le National Institute of Clinical Health and Excellence (NICE) est l’organe du NHS qui a élaboré les lignes directrices générales que les CCG appliquent ensuite au niveau local. S’ils le désirent, les patients affiliés à une assurance privée (ne relevant pas du National Health Service (NHS)) peuvent demander un traitement pour des raisons non médicales.
En tant qu’organisme de contrôle de la procréation assistée au Royaume-Uni, l’HFEA demande aux centres agréés pour le traitement de l’infertilité de suivre les prescriptions en matière de dépistage pour éviter la transmission de maladies. Les donneurs doivent subir un dépistage des maladies infectieuses telles que le VIH, l’hépatite B et C et le cytomégalovirus (CMV). Parmi les critères à prendre en considération figurent l’âge du patient, son état de santé et son aptitude à satisfaire les besoins du ou des enfants.
