The North-West region of Ireland / Northern Ireland continues to serve as an inspiration for senior officials from municipal authorities and tourism agencies in Bosnia and Herzegovina and neighbouring states.
Participants of the virtual study visit, organised by the Centre of Expertise for Good Governance on 26 February 2021, learned that tourists are blind to borders and to the administrative structures of territorial administration. Nevertheless, good multi-level governance and strategic alignment of governance actors are key to building sustainable cross-border cooperation structures, as outlined in the Council of Europe toolkits. Tim O'Connor, former Joint Secretary of the North-South Ministerial Council in Ireland, told participants that "Cross-border work is complex, challenging, and tremendously rewarding."
The workshop also included presentations from the neighbouring municipalities in the North-West City Region of Ireland/ Northern Ireland, Tourism Ireland, and CESCI Balkans. The Institute of International Sociology Gorizia presented the GO25 cross-border cooperation that led to the award of European Capital of Culture to Nova Gorica /Gorizia for 2025.
