Action against Economic Crime in North Macedonia launches support to enhance effectiveness of sanctions for breaches of conflict of interest provisions

The Action against Economic Crime in North Macedonia continued providing support to the Working Group responsible for drafting the proposals to amend the Law on prevention of corruption and conflict of interest in compliance with GRECO recommendations through successive meetings in 2024.

During the latest meeting on 22 April 2024, the Action stimulated discussions and provided additional advice regarding outstanding issues to be addressed. It followed an earlier meeting in March 2024, where the Action presented the international standards and made proposals to the Working Group to consider when preparing amendments to the Law on combating corruption and conflict of interest. A draft analysis of the sanctioning regime under the Law on prevention of corruption and conflict of interest, prepared by the Action, further drew attention to the shortfalls and proposals for enhancing the effectiveness of the sanctioning regime for cases of violation of the Law.

Feedback received at the April meeting will be documented in the draft analysis and proposals made by the Action and will be further used by national authorities in the process of amending the Law on combating corruption and conflict of interests.

This activity was organised by Action against economic crime in North Macedonia, within the framework of the European Union/Council of Europe joint Programme Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Türkiye (Horizontal Facility III), co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe.
