Investigators, prosecutors and analysts from Armenia improved their skills in undertaking financial investigations to detect money laundering and predicate offences

In an effort to further support Armenia to enhance the skills of law enforcement practitioners to investigate and prosecute economic crime cases, the Council of Europe has organized a training on Financial investigation and prosecution of Money Laundering offences, in cooperation with the Financial Monitoring Centre (the FIU of Armenia). The event took place on 5-6 September 2023 and was attended by 30 participants including investigators, prosecutors, analysts as well as representatives from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Justice.

The training activity aimed at increasing the capacities of the law enforcement authorities to effectively identify, trace and seize assets at the earliest stages of an investigation, and advance proactive financial investigations for money laundering and predicate offences. Apart of increasing the capacities of dedicated investigative and prosecution structures the event also aimed at raising awareness regarding the purpose of financial investigations and its importance to investigation and prosecution.

The event provided a platform for engaging a productive discussion regarding operational stages of financial investigations and encountered challenges shared by participants from their experience. International cooperation mechanisms to be used in money laundering investigations and confiscation mechanisms were discussed with the participants based on case-scenarios and internal practices and challenges faced by the Armenian stakeholders.
The Project will continue to support the law enforcement authorities of Armenia to improve internal practices and skills in investigating and prosecuting economic crime cases in line with international standards and practices.

This activity was organised in the framework of the project “Enhancing national capacities for effective prevention and fight against economic crime in Armenia” co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe in their Partnership for Good Governance III 2023-2027.
