On 28 February 2024, the Parliament of the Republic of North Macedonia adopted the Law on confiscation of property in civil procedure, aimed at tackling illegally obtained assets. The Action against Economic Crime in North Macedonia had provided technical assistance to this legislative initiative through consultations and advice to the members of the dedicated working group in light of the international standards and European good practices.

Namely, on 24 November 2023, the Action against Economic Crime provided substantive assistance to a debate on the Draft Law on the Confiscation of Property in Civil Procedure facilitated by Ms Slavica Grkovska, Deputy Prime Minister for Good Governance and attended by representatives from beneficiary institutions, the judiciary, NGOs, and members of Parliament. It built on the analysis and findings of the feasibility study provided by the Action in 2021, which had prompted the formation of a dedicated working group, with consistent commitment to the legislative  by authorities.

The debate and the subsequent review of the draft law aimed at analysing its provisions for compliance with international standards, good practices and the European Court of Human Rights case law and by suggesting a number of recommendations for its further improvement.

This activity was organised by Action against economic crime in North Macedonia, within the framework of the European Union/Council of Europe joint Programme Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Türkiye (Horizontal Facility III), co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe.
