Practitioners of the Security Service of Ukraine advanced their knowledge and skills on virtual assets

The representatives of the Security Service of Ukraine recently concluded a three-day online capacity-building activity focused on enhancing investigation skills in cases involving cryptocurrencies. The training aimed to equip operatives, investigators, and analysts with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively address criminal offences associated with virtual assets.

The intensive training program covered a wide array of topics crucial to cryptocurrency investigations. These included international standards, national legislation, blockchain fundamentals, cryptocurrency wallets, investigation planning and execution, virtual asset typologies, asset identification and tracing, as well as asset seizure and release procedures. Additionally, participants were also briefed on IT solutions vital for conducting effective investigations in this domain.

The training program successfully empowered practitioners within the Security Service of Ukraine with both theoretical understanding and practical skills essential for tackling money laundering and terrorist financing cases involving cryptocurrencies. Attendees gained insights into international standards, legal frameworks, technical tools, and collaborative approaches necessary for comprehensive investigations.

The success of the capacity-building activity was attributed to a blend of national and international experts. Their diverse backgrounds provided valuable perspectives, with a national expert offering insights from technological and business angles, and an international expert sharing firsthand experiences in criminal investigations related to virtual assets.

The comprehensive agenda, expert-led sessions, and interactive components ensured a thorough understanding of the subject matter, contributing significantly to the professional development of participants in this rapidly evolving field. The Security Service of Ukraine is now better equipped to navigate the complexities of cryptocurrency-related crimes, further enhancing its capabilities in combating illicit activities in the digital realm.

This event is part of the European Union and the Council of Europe joint programme “Partnership for Good Governance”, co-funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe, and implemented by the Council of Europe, in the framework of the project ”Enhancing anti-money laundering, counter terrorist financing and asset recovery regime in Ukraine”.
