Between 6 and 9 May 2019, the Horizontal Facility Action against Economic Crime in North Macedonia organised a peer exchange visit to Belgium and Denmark, for 10 representatives of the Financial Intelligence Office and the Central Register, responsible by law for the establishment of the beneficial ownership registry in North Macedonia. During the visit, officials from North Macedonia met with representatives from the Belgian and Danish authorities managing the beneficial ownership registry and discussed legal, operational, and technical aspects. The participants were predominantly interested in IT solutions used in Belgium and Denmark, and the challenges they faced when establishing the registers, especially in obliging companies to register, verification of the information, controlling the registration and sanctioning. The visit will support further development of necessary bylaws and technical solutions in the country in anticipation of the registry launch.
