Greek legal professionals take the HELP course Introduction to the ECHR and the ECtHR

The Council of Europe HELP course Introduction to the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) was launched for a group of 46 judges and members of judicial staff, in cooperation with the School of Judiciary of Greece.

The online launching event was opened by Dimitrios Emmanouilidis, Councillor of the Council of State, General Director of the Greek School of Judiciary, and Eva Pastrana, Head of HELP Unit, Council of Europe. They both praised the cooperation between the Greek School of Judiciary and the Council of Europe Programme on Human Rights Education for Legal Professionals (HELP) and stressed the importance of online tools for judicial training, especially in the current challenging times.

During the launching event, Nikolaos Sitaropoulos, Head of Division, Council of Europe Department for the Execution of the Judgments of the European Court of Human Rights, made an intervention on the execution of the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights in the Greek context. Maria-Andriani Kostopoulou, HELP Info Point for Greece and co-author of the updated version of the course, presented this updated version and its learning objectives.

The Council of Europe HELP Programme was presented by Ana Medarska-Lazova, Deputy Head of HELP Unit, Council of Europe.

Petros Alikakos, HELP Focal Point and national tutor, who will be tutoring this course, summarized the previous HELP actions implemented in cooperation with the Judiciary School. He further provided details on accessing and navigating the course, on the national adaptation, as well as on the time frame for the tutored course implementation.

The course will be implemented until the end of the year. The successful participants will then be jointly certified by the School of Judiciary and the HELP Programme.

The HELP course Introduction to the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) was published in its updated version in March 2020 and consistsof the following modules:

  • Module 1: Introduction to the European Convention on Human Rights  
    • Structure of the European Convention on Human Rights
    • Interpreting the European Convention on Human Rights
    • The European Convention on Human Rights within the national legal order
  • Module 2: Introduction to the European Court of Human Rights
    • Structure of the European Court of Human Rights
    • The life of an application before the European Court of Human Rights
  • Module 3: Execution of the Judgments of the European Court of Human Rights
    • Supervision of the implementation of the European Court of Human Rights judgments
    • Execution of the European Court of Human Rights judgments 

This HELP course is available for free in English and French, as well as in Croatian, Greek, Serbian and Spanish.
