Western Balkans: regional HELP online course on Data protection and privacy rights launched for lawyers

On 23 April 2021, the Council of Europe HELP online course on Data protection and privacy rights was launched during an online meeting gathering 36 lawyers from Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo*, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia.

The participants became acquainted with the Human Rights Education for Legal Professionals (HELP) Programme of the Council of Europe and its online platform that includes a catalogue of 38 courses on human rights.

The group was welcomed by Eva Pastrana (Head of HELP Unit) and could benefit from a presentation by Sophie Kwasny (Head of Data Protection Unit), on Convention 108+ (Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to the Automatic Protection of Personal Data) as a multilateral binding instrument and its interplay with EU law.

The tutors, Dorota Głowacka and Milica Novakovic, provided participants with the details on the course structure and its implementation. They will be guiding the participants through the course in the following three months.

Following the online launch event, various lawyers will be enrolled on the course page and will attend the HELP online course on Data protection and privacy rights in English. Those among them who successfully complete it will receive a HELP certificate issued by the Council of Europe.

The regional launch was organised in cooperation with the Bar Associations from the Western Balkans within the scope of the Regional action “HELP in the Western Balkans” which is a part of the joint European Union/Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Turkey 2019-2022”, implemented by the Council of Europe.
