Civil law departments of all appellate courts and the Supreme Court meet in Novi Sad to continue work on case law harmonisation.

Based on an agreement between the Supreme Court and appellate courts, the practice of quarterly meetings between the civil law departments of all four appellate courts and the Supreme Court of Serbia was established. The joint EU/CoE project “Support for the Implementation of Judicial Reform in Serbia” supported the second yearly meeting on 7 June 2024 in Novi Sad.

Judges from the appellate courts presented two disputed legal issues that caused conflicting stances by case law departments of the four appellate courts. Supreme Court judges provided legal stances taken by the civil law case law department of the Supreme Court regarding the disputed legal issues, opened a discussion, and prompted different legal opinions among the appellate court judges.

The Council of Europe representative opened the meeting and presented measures aimed at case law harmonisation under the “Support for the Implementation of Judicial Reform in Serbia” project. The project will continue to support case law harmonisation efforts, facilitate the usage of appropriate IT tools, and further raise awareness among judges on the importance of case law harmonisation..
