The European Union and the Council of Europe in cooperation with the Supreme Court of Georgia organized a presentation of the Georgian interface of HUDOC case law database in Georgian.
In 2017, within the framework of the European Union-Council of Europe joint project “Application of the European Convention on Human Rights and harmonisation of national legislation and judicial practice in line with European standards in Georgia” the Supreme Court and Ministry of Justice of Georgia and the European Court of human Rights signed the Memorandum on creation of the Georgian interface of the European Court of Human Rights case law database HUDOC.
As a result of the joint work of the Council of Europe, the Supreme Court of Georgia and the Ministry of Justice, the Georgian version of the HUDOC was developed.
To support the process, in 2017 within the joint project of the Council of Europe and the European Union on “Application of the European Convention on Human Rights and harmonisation of national legislation and judicial practice in line with European standards in Georgia” 45 judgments and subsequent legal summaries of the European Court of human Rights were translated into Georgian. In addition, analytical units of the Supreme Court and Tbilisi City Court translated more than 100 judgments and legal summaries of the European Court of human Rights. Further implementation of the terms of the Memorandum was also supported by the Human Rights expert of the European Union "EU for Justice" project.
The HUDOC database now contains 26.400 case-law translations in 31 languages other than English and French. Some 880 texts are in Georgian. A language-specific filter allows for rapid searching in HUDOC, including in free text. The Georgian user interface joins the existing English, French, Russian, Turkish and Spanish versions.
The presentation was attended by the international donor organizations supporting justice system reform in Georgia, judges of the Common Courts of Georgia, Media and NGO sector representatives. Cristian Urse, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Georgia and Mzia Todua, Acting President of the Supreme Court of Georgia addressed the invitees in the welcoming remarks.
The event was organised in the framework of European Union-Council of Europe joint project “Strengthening the Application of the European Convention on Human Rights in Georgia”, funded within the European Union-Council of Europe Partnership for Good Governance.
