A study visit of representatives of the Ombudsperson’s Office of the Republic of Moldova to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg was organised on 14-15 June, within the Council of Europe project “Support to criminal justice reforms in the Republic of Moldova” funded by the Danish Government.

The visit aimed at familiarising the staff of the Moldovan Ombudsperson’s institution with details of the functioning of monitoring mechanisms under several CoE conventions in the area of human rights protection and discussing challenges of the reform of the Ombudsperson’s Office in the Republic of Moldova. The programme included a series of meetings with representatives of different CoE structures, including the Office of the Human Rights Commissioner, the Secretariat of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT), the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI), the Department of the Execution of the ECtHR’s judgments, etc. The visitors also had a meeting with the Judge of the European Court of Human Rights elected in respect of the Republic of Moldova.

Bilateral meetings of the Moldovan Ombudsperson and the Ombudsperson for children were organised with the Human Rights Commissioner Mr Muznieks and the Director of Human Rights Mr Giakoumopoulos.

As a result, representatives of the Ombudsperson of the Republic of Moldova enhanced their knowledge about the activity of the Council of Europe monitoring mechanisms and established new contacts aiming at intensifying further cooperation with the Council of Europe bodies.
