In a significant stride towards enhancing legal transparency and safeguarding personal data, the anonymisation (pseudonymisation) tool has been developed in the framework of the TJENI project. The Romanian Academy Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence “Mihai Drăgănescu” (RACAI), in close collaboration with the Superior Council of Magistracy has successfully completed this groundbreaking initiative, which represents an important step forward in legal technology of Romania.

The System for the Anonymisation of Romanian Jurisprudence (SAROJ) is built with out-of-the-box scalability allowing for high-performance processing of an increasing numbers of documents. The new system employs state-of-the-art large language models (LLMs) for detecting named entities (NEs) that need to be anonymised, thus increasing the recognition performance. The system uses dictionaries and regular expression lists for certain types of NEs, that are particularly suited for such recognition processes (like personal identification codes, vehicle registration, email addresses). As a result, the implementation of the new anonymisation software will contribute to enhancing of the transparency of the Romanian judiciary, while ensuring that the personal data are protected.

The project “Foster Transparency of Judicial Decisions and Enhancing the National Implementation of the ECHR” is implemented by the Council of Europe and funded by the EEA and Norway Grants fund for Regional Cooperation.
