Retour Training on the Right to Fair Trial under the European Convention of Human Rights for Legal Aid Service lawyers

Training on the Right to Fair Trial under the European Convention of Human Rights for Legal Aid Service lawyers

On 6-7 September 2018 the European Union (EU) and the Council of Europe (CoE), in co-operation with the Legal Aid Service (LAS) in Georgia, organized training on “The Right Fair Trial under the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR)” for representative of the Eastern Georgia bureaus and advisory centers of the Legal Aid Service.

The purpose of the training was to equip lawyers with systematic knowledge about international fair trial standards. Bearing in mind the importance of the Georgian judicial practice and an increasing number of cases in which the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights were invoked, the training provided opportunity for participants to discuss in details the practice of the Georgian courts in applying the Convention standards.

As a result of the training up to twenty five participants are better aware of main principles derived from Article 6 of the European Convention of Human Rights and its main aspects, including presumption of innocence, guarantees against self-incrimination, equality of arms, right to lawyer and other important issues.

The event was organised in the framework of the European Union – Council of Europe joint project “Strengthening the Application of the European Convention on Human Rights in Georgia”, within the EU-CoE Partnership for Good Governance.
