On 22-24 January, project facilitated delivery of training modules on treatment of women and juveniles deprived of liberty. Apart from the lecture on women in detention, trainees benefited from the on-job coaching provided by international experts during the official visits to women and juveniles’ detention facilities located in Lipjan/Lipljan Correctional Center.

Participants were trained in international standards for treatment of women deprived of liberty including relevant CPT norms and United Nations Rules for Treatment of Women Prisoners and Non-custodial Measures for Women Offenders, so-called “Bangkok Rules”. Particular attention was given to specific needs of women related to pre-natal and post-natal care, mother and child care services, specific hygienic and dietary requirements and equal access to meaningful activities. The practical part of the training was delivered during the official monitoring visits to establishments accommodating convicted women and women in detention on remand. were also provided with coaching during the official visits to juvenile pre-trial detention facility, juvenile prison and establishment for execution of educational measures issued to minors in conflict with law.

Apart from the National Preventive Mechanism and supporting regional staff, list of participants was expanded to relevant staff of the Prison Inspectorate and human rights unit of the Ministry of Justice as well as to professionals of child rights’ unit and anti-discrimination department of the Ombudsperson’s Institution.
