Lawyers from İzmir enhance their knowledge on human rights standards on immigration detention

The joint European Union/Council of Europe action  “Strengthening the human rights protection in the context of migration in Türkiye”, in co-operation with the Union of Turkish Bar Associations, continue to support lawyers from local Bar Associations across Türkiye.

Sixteen lawyers from the İzmir Bar Association were introduced to the international and European human rights standards with a focus on the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights on the right to liberty and security, lawfulness of detention, alternatives to immigration detention, and safeguards for the protection of vulnerable persons in the context of migration.

The two-day training was delivered by experienced lawyers/mentors who were previously trained under the action. The training provided participants with valuable insights about the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights and the one of the Turkish Constitutional Court. The participants underlined the importance of the training provided and expressed their readiness to apply the knowledge and skills they gained in their daily work.

The action will continue to organise similar trainings with other local Bar Associations across Türkiye with a view to strengthening the knowledge and capacities of lawyers on the applicable human rights standards on immigration detention. The trainings aim to enhance the protection of persons in the context of migration, especially in relation to protection from arbitrariness, access to procedural safeguards and appropriate detention conditions.

This  action “Strengthening the human rights protection in the context of migration in Türkiye”  is part of the joint European Union and Council of Europe programme “Horizontal Facility for the Western Balkans and Türkiye”.
