Tackling racism and intolerance in the area of health care

On 14 May 2024, the Secretariat of the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) published a new factsheet on addressing racism and intolerance in healthcare. The document outlines ECRI's key recommendations from its country reports during the fourth, fifth, and sixth monitoring cycles. It focuses on groups particularly vulnerable to racism, discrimination, and intolerance in healthcare, including migrants, Black persons and people of African descent. ECRI has called for appropriate research in this area, preventive measures to be implemented, and accountability for any abuses to be ensured. It underlined that the states should ensure access of migrants, irrespective of their legal status, to health care, including by providing essential information and services related to health care in an appropriate range of languages and ensuring availability of interpreters. It also recommended that the states take specific actions against racism and discrimination against Black persons / people of African descent.

This factsheet is part of a series published by the Secretariat. Some of the previously published factsheets focus for instance on integration and inclusion of migrants, preventing and combating racism and intolerance in and through education and preventing and combatting racism and discrimination against Black persons.
