As part of its periodic visits to Turkey and Poland in May 2017, the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) visited a number of immigration detention facilities.
In Turkey, the CPT delegation visited the Removal Centres in Istanbul-Binkılıç, Izmir-Harmandalı and Izmir-Işıkkent. It also visited rooms for passengers declared inadmissible and new holding facilities for asylum-seekers in the transit zone at Istanbul-Atatürk Airport.
In Poland, the CPT delegation visited the Guarded Centres for Foreigners in Białystok and in Lesznowola.
At the end of each of these visits, the CPT delegation presented its preliminary observations to the respective authorities. It will now draft reports with detailed findings on the situation encountered.
