On 28 March 2017 in Istanbul, the Council of Europe´s EUR-OPA Major Hazards Agreement organised a discussion session on “Migration, Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience” focusing on the need for more co-ordinated, integrated and inclusive approaches to disaster risk reduction with regard to migrants, asylum seekers and refugees. More than one hundred participants prepared recommendations on the importance of taking migrants into account in risk management, which will be presented at the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in Cancun, Mexico, on 22-26 May 2017. The meeting was hosted by the Government of Turkey, represented by the Turkish Disaster Management Authority (AFAD), in the framework of the 2017 European Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction (EFDRR). The European and Mediterranean Major Hazards Agreement (EUR-OPA) promotes the integration of migrants, asylum seekers and refugees in disaster risk-reduction activities. The European Forum for Disaster Risk Reduction is co-organised by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Council of Europe’s EUR-OPA Major Hazards Agreement and the European Commission.
