The Council of Europe working with the legal professionals on establishment of unified court practice

The Council of Europe and the European Union continued discussions around main findings of the Council of Europe Review on compatibility with the European standards of Georgia’s Criminal Procedure Code and related legislative acts. In the format of justice coordination council specific recommendations related to consistency between legal acts, preventive measures arrangements, conduct of investigative actions, rights of vulnerable participants of criminal procedure, admissibility of evidences were presented. Moreover, findings of the Review related to jury trials were discussed in great details. In addition, participants exchanged ideas about matters such as jury trial instructions, role of judge, and recusal of jurors avoiding discriminatory motive. As a result of the meeting participants elaborated and agreed on common approach to practical aspects of jury trials and agreed to continue work for establishment unified court practice and aligning criminal justice legislation with the best European Standards. 

This event is held as part of the project “Supporting the Criminal Justice Reforms - Tackling Criminal Aspects of the Judicial Reforms in Georgia”, funded by the European Union and the Council of Europe and implemented by the Council of Europe.
