Retour "The European Social Charter and its importance in Georgia" - a cycle of seminars for representatives of the legal profession

On 21, 23 March and 1 April 2023, the Council of Europe organized a cycle of seminars on the topic - European Social Charter and its importance in Georgia. The seminar was conducted for three different groups, which included judges of the general courts of Georgia, members of the Georgian Bar Association, staff members of various committees of the Parliament and various departments of the Ministry of Justice. The training was aimed at deepening the participants knowledge regarding the European Social Charter and helping the participants to strengthen the use of the European Social Charter in the process of legal proceedings or policy formation, which will contribute to bringing social rights protection standards in the country closer to the European standards.

The seminar emphasized the importance of the Social Charter, the standards of each category of rights provided by the Charter, the issues of rights protected by the Charter and the Georgian legislation in the field of labour/employment (including: access to employment; equal labour opportunities and pay for women and men; prohibition of exploitation; collective labour relations; protection of workers ; guarantees in case of termination of employment). The seminar was conducted by Giorgi Chkheidze, a human rights expert and a consultant of the Council of Europe.

Part of the discussion during the training revolved around the issue of compliance of the national regulation and practice with the standards of the Charter, existing gaps, and possible solutions to the problems. Also, during the discussion, several issues were identified that require active cooperation between the parties in order to bring the national regulations closer to the regulations of the European Social Charter.

The event was organised within the Council of Europe Project "Strengthening Protection of Social and Economic Rights in Georgia." The Project is part of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Georgia 2020-2023.
