Empowering Georgian media to combat discrimination and promote equality

On 15-16 June 2024 Council of Europe and the United Nations Development Programme together with the Kingdom of Norway and in collaboration with the “Rule of Law Center” organised the training session aimed at enhancing media capacity to fight discrimination and promote equality.  TV media representatives from Tbilisi, Kakheti, Kvemo Kartli, Guria and Adjara came together to delve deeper into the subject and share their experiences.

The two-day training familiarised media representatives with sensitivities of discrimination topics, such as femicide and gender-based violence. The session, facilitated by the psychologist, helped them understand the peculiarities of the communication with the victims of discrimination. The media representatives also explored the risks of using hate speech and how it can influence the work of media on the one hand and minority groups on the other. Additionally, they were introduced with the legislative aspects of bias-motivated offenses, hate speech, and hate crimes, along with best practices for their coverage.

To ensure a comprehensive learning experience, the training incorporated practical elements and simulation exercises, allowing participants to apply their newfound knowledge in their work and real-world scenarios.

This event is a part of the project ,,Enhancing Equality and Non-Discrimination in Georgia”, which is funded through the Council of Europe Action Plan for Georgia 2024-2027.
