Round-table discussion among media stakeholders on the amendments to the Law of Georgia on Broadcasting took place

A round-table discussion on the amendments to the Law of Georgia on Broadcasting was organised by the Council of Europe Office in Georgia, in cooperation with the Sector Economy and Economic Policy Committee of the Parliament of Georgia.

The event was held at the Parliament of Georgia in the framework of the public-private dialogue of respective Committee. It has gathered up to 30 participants, involving members of the Parliament, representatives of the media outlets, civil society organisations, Communications Commission (media regulatory authority) and other public institutions.

The Council of Europe expert presented the “Options Paper”, proposing various options for professional media regulation based on relevant European and international practices.

The presentation was followed by the discussion among stakeholders and the Council of Europe Expert. The discussion was focused on professional media regulation and perspectives for Georgia, as it is one of the key issues in the process of adoption of draft changes to the Law on Broadcasting.

The Roundtable contributed to the inclusiveness of the legislative process since it enabled representatives of all stakeholders to express their views on the draft changes to the Law. It was agreed to follow-up on the conclusions of the Roundtable through additional meetings on specific aspects of the draft Law.

The activity was held in the framework of the Project “Strengthening Media Freedom, Internet Governance and Personal Data Protection in Georgia”, which is funded by the Council of Europe 2020-2023 Action Plan for Georgia.
