Retour First Scout Unit of Skopje - sharing examples of good practice during Covid19

How to recognize SCOUT in isolation?

To tell you the truth, after being in isolation, scouts are much more creative, they started digging old pictures of activities they visited in and around the country, recording videos of what they do and causing other scouts to do ... but of course they find it a bit difficult. Many would like to get involved in something more useful, volunteer to help, but we have been told that the best thing we can do for now is to sit at home and share how to spend all our time at home useful and quality.

How does isolation due to a coronavirus epidemic affect our activities?

As every spring, we had many activities planned for this also in the and the region, we had planned to go to Montenegro to meet with scouts from Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia, we planned to go to Nis to march for a healthy environment and many others around the country as a spring bivouac, competitions ... unfortunately we had to cancel them all - that is, we will reschedule them as soon as they give us the green light. To be honest It is difficult for us and nostalgia is felt on social networks.

How we are dealing with coronavirus situation

We don't come up with an idea, we want EVERYONE to follow the recommendations to end the whole crisis situation as soon as possible and finally go out, to go up in the mountains where we have a forest house, set a tent by the lake ... Anyhow we see what others around the world are doing and so we are doing the same. For example, we made a video with an experiment to show why it is important to maintain regular hygiene, and we also made the largest collage of messages, we have 70 of our scouts.

Launching new skill for merit badge "Do It Yourself"

As youth leaders of organization with over 130 active members we had to think of something to continue to keep the rhythm and the spirit we have. Scouting is very important to all our members because, we practice positive values in nurture, life skills, we take care of proper physical, social, character development in children and youth and contribute to the education of young people through a system of values based on scouting. Our Promise and Laws, are helping us build a better world where people are self-sufficient as individuals and have a constructive role in society.

Scouting program is based on learning new skills, after a scout will acquire a skill, he/she has to take “exam” with predetermined rules and win an emblem (merit badge) that he/she has to sew on it scout uniform .... Now we are sitting at home! That's why our team of volunteers came up with this new skill where scouts can do something from home, show it to us, present it and win the badge. All they need to do is to put on the scout uniform and scarf and record a video where they do something useful and of course send it to us. During the past month we have collected a lot of videos that can be found on our YouTube channel.

30-day scout online challenge for all young people

In the period when almost all activities of the scouts are on hold due to the new coronavirus, the Scout Association of Macedonia introduced the 30-day online challenge, intended to educate and keep young people active at home during this period.

During the thirty days of the challenge, all scouts, but also other children and young people who wanted to fill their time quality, SAM gave the opportunity of educational and fun through a series of activities to upgrade their knowledge, to socialize online with their peers and win awards and recognitions. Some of the activities were: making a makeshift camp at home, cooking, sign language learning, making protective masks, participating in Earth Hour 2020, etc. In the first 5 days, more than 1,000 scouts, children and young people took part in this activity.

Our message to young people

Our message to young people is to start behaving more conscientiously and responsibly towards their fellow citizens, not to bring them to high risks with their desire to be outside ... we all want to be outside - we cry, but no, we sit at home. Together we must be in solidarity, to respect each other and to cooperate.
