Retour Renewing Peace Education in intercultural youth activities

Renewing Peace Education in intercultural youth activities

This consultative meeting brought together 35 experts in peace education, peacebuilding and conflict transformation to review and renew key contents and approaches to peace education in the intercultural youth activities of the Council of Europe, be them organised at the European Youth Centres or supported by the European Youth Foundation.

The meeting was organised to pool together experiences, approaches and identifying methodologies for credible activities in peace education and conflict transformation that take into account the realities of today’s Europe and the concerns of young people.

Building peaceful and inclusive societies is one of the priorities of the 2030 Strategy of the youth sector and of the Youth for Democracy programme and includes objectives such as strengthening young people’s capacities, to prevent violence, transform conflict and to build a culture of peace.

The conclusions and proposals of the meeting include a strengthening of peace education in the medium-long term, based on a shared understanding of peace education as knowledge, skills and attitudes for a culture of peace and non-violence based on human rights. The meeting also recommended deepening and sharing experiences of practitioners across Europe and beyond, supported policy standards for peacebuilding with young people based on citizenship and human rights education.

Other proposals address the mainstreaming peace education in intercultural youth activities, making peace education sustainable, advancing and deepening the experience of the Youth Peace Camp, and supporting youth educators and multipliers in their communities.

The meeting was organised in cooperation with the European Youth Foundation.
