The European Youth Centre Strasbourg hosted the study session " Rise: Design for emergent futures ", organised by the Youth Department in cooperation with the Don Bosco Youth Network (DBYN), bringing together 22 participants. The study session took place from 27 November to 1 December 2023 and aimed to train volunteers of DBYN’s member organisations to increase their knowledge and capacities in non-formal education and youth work in times of crisis.

 Throughout the study session, participants explored different methods to do youth work and organise non-formal educational activities in their local and national realities in times of the ‘polycrisis’[1], and how it affects themselves, their organisations, the young people they work with and the overall community. Several aspects of the polycrisis were explored such as patterns of crises, impact on mental health, conflict management techniques, the role of human rights education. Participants also worked with LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® to understand the concept of emergent design and learn how to apply it in their daily youth work service.

 Throughout the 5-day long programme, participants developed their facilitation competences and awareness of human rights (education) and engaged in various COMPASS activities through experiential learning. As a result, a triangle for emergent design was produced that will be used in participants’ local realities.
