Back The CPT adopted 10 visit reports and elected a new Bureau – President and Vice-Presidents

The European Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CPT) held its 116th plenary meeting from 10 to 14 March 2025.
The CPT adopted 10 visit reports and elected a new Bureau – President and Vice-Presidents

The CPT adopted the reports on the visits to Bulgaria (September 2024), Bosnia and Herzegovina (September 2024), Denmark – Greenland (January 2025), France (September-October 2024), the Netherlands (October 2024), Portugal (November 2024), Romania (September-October 2024), Serbia (November/December 2024), Slovenia (October 2024), Spain - Catalonia (November-December 2024). The reports will now be communicated to the national authorities.

During its week-long session, the Committee also discussed the outcome of the high-level talks recently held in Denmark (January 2025) and Latvia (March 2025), the follow up to be given to previous visits and potential ad hoc visits to be carried out in 2025.

The Committee elected the following members to the Bureau for a two-year term of office: Alan Mitchell, medical doctor, member in respect of the United Kingdom, was re-elected President of the CPT, Marie Kmecová, lawyer, member in respect of Czechia, was elected 1st Vice-President, and Gunda Wössner, psychologist, member in respect of Germany, was elected 2nd Vice-President.

The Committee also welcomed three news members: Valérie Bernard (in respect of Monaco), Christopher Cremona (in respect of Malta) and Ewa Dawidziuk (in respect of Poland).

The programme of periodic visits for 2026 was also adopted and will be published in due course.
