Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić delivered a pledge at the high-level event “Human Rights 75” to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

While on mission to United Nations in Geneva, the Secretary General met with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk. The exchange of views focused on the follow-up to the Reykjavik Summit and on the institutional co-operation between the two Organisations. The human rights situation in respect of the Russian aggression against Ukraine was part of the discussion.

In a meeting with UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, Marija Pejčinović Burić highlighted the Council of Europe’s support for Ukraine and the establishment of the Register of Damage Caused by the Aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. The state of play concerning the forced transfers and deportation of children of Ukraine was also discussed.

European Court of Human Rights judgments in cases of human rights violations have led to the improvement of people’s lives across Council of Europe member states.

Human Rights Day is observed by the international community every year on 10 December. It commemorates the day in 1948 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
