Located in the Île-de-France region, Seine-Saint-Denis is one of France's most densely populated areas and the youngest in mainland France (35% of the population is under the age of 25). Its territory is characterised by its dynamism in the cultural, community and economic fields. Seine-Saint-Denis is the Île-de-France département with the highest rate of business start-ups; at the same time, it is facing the challenge of combating poverty.

Population diversity

Seine-Saint-Denis has the highest proportion of immigrants (30% of the population) of all the départements of mainland France. More than 130 nationalities are represented among its residents. The ten main countries of origin of the foreign population in Seine-Saint-Denis are Algeria, Morocco, Portugal, Tunisia, Mali, Sri Lanka, Turkey, China, Romania and Côte d'Ivoire. The department has committed itself to a specific anti-discrimination mission.

Closely linked to the history of immigration in France, the history of Seine-Saint-Denis is that of a sharing of cultures that is a factor of wealth, attractiveness, solidarity and creativity. People from every continent meet, mix and mingle to form a unique and creative cultural identity that symbolises the urban transformations and plural identity of today's France. To tell the story of this urban modernity, in 2023 the Département launched Multitude, the Intercultural Biennial of Seine-Saint-Denis.
