Vigdís Finnbogadóttir
Iceland

Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, the world's first democratically elected female president, left an indelible mark on human rights. Serving as Iceland's President from 1980 to 1996, she championed equality and women's rights, paving the way for future generations of female leaders.

Finnbogadóttir's presidency symbolised a milestone in gender equality, inspiring women worldwide. Her advocacy for human rights extended beyond Iceland's borders, influencing policies and initiatives at the Council of Europe. She emphasised the importance of dialogue and co-operation in advancing human rights, fostering greater unity and understanding among member states.

As a prominent figure in European politics, Finnbogadóttir actively promoted the Council's values of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
Overall, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir's legacy underscores the transformative power of leadership in advancing human rights and shaping the work of international organisations such as the Council of Europe. Her pioneering spirit and commitment to equality continue to inspire generations of activists and leaders striving for a more just and inclusive world.

When Finnbogadóttir came to power, a mere five percent of members of parliament were women. The country has radically moved on since then, becoming a world leader in gender equality.
