Netherlands: ECRML protection extended to the Papiamento/u language in the European part of the Kingdom

On 1 July 2024, the Netherlands notified the Council of Europe of the extension of the protection of the Papiamento/Papiamentu language under Part II of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages to the European part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. On this occasion, a meeting took place between a delegation of the authorities of the Netherlands, including representatives of the Island of Bonaire, as well as the President and a member of the Akademia Papiamentu, and the Secretariat of the Division of National Minorities and Minority Languages of the Council of Europe.

The opening of an exhibition organised by the Permanent Representation of the Netherlands commemorating the anniversary of the abolition of slavery by law in Suriname and the Caribbean islands (1 July 1863), then colonies of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, framed the event, which was followed by the official deposit ceremony with the Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe.

The Committee of Experts welcomes this extension and encourages states parties to regularly review their level of commitment under the Charter to reflect improvements in the situation of their regional or minority languages.
