- Description
- The Fichtebunker (1883-1884) is Berlin's last preserved gasometer. It was turned into an air-raid shelter during World War II, and subsequently used as a shelter for the homeless and for refugees. Today, lofts have been built on the roof. The interior of the largest bunker in Berlin, which is still in its original condition, is used as an exhibition space by Berliner Unterwelten.
The non-profit association Berliner Unterwelten (est. 1997) works for promoting research, documentation and preservation of the underground monuments of Berlin’s history.
The Fichtebunker Museum is an Individual Site of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.
