Description
The Ekomuseum Bergslagen is a foundation consisting of the seven municipalities. The purpose of the Foundation is to strengthen the identity of the countryside, clarify the nature of the Berglagen, and promote the development of the sites of Ekomuseum Bergslagen into visitor destinations.
Hammarbacken was part of the first ironworks founded by the Swedish King Gustav Vasa in 1550, with four buildings conserved and open to the public.
Flogberget Iron Mine was operation between the 17th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The site offers guided tours and a small mining museum.
The preserved buildings at Västanfors include a lock on the canal, a farmstead, a large granary, Fagersta mill, a hydroelectric power station built in 1900 and a Bessemer converter, with some of them moved from other locations. The Fagersta-Västanfors Hometown Association (Fagersta-Västanfors Hembygdsförening) is part of the Ekomuseum Bergsladen in promoting local heritage.
New Lapphytan is the working reconstruction of the furnace uncovered in the neighbouring industrial archeological site of Lapphytan. The site explains technical skills, the workers, raw materials and finished products.
At Ängelsberg, a refinery dating from the pioneer years of the oil industry is preserved in Oljeön on Lake Ammanigen, near the Engelsberg ironworks.
The Ekomuseum Bergsladen is a Corporate Member of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.
